Contractor shall be an established company regularly engaged in the installation of epoxy floor systems.

Products

Installed materials shall be Superior Epoxies & Coatings, Inc. products specified herein.

  1. Superior Quartz Binder is a 100% solids, two-component epoxy consisting of an epoxy resin and an aliphatic amine hardener. Used as a base coat and intermediate coat.
  2. Aggregate is silica-quartz granules colored with ceramically fused, chemically inert pigments.
  3. Superior Gloss Cleaner and Pigmented Topcoat is a two-component epoxy consisting of an epoxy resin and hardener formulated to provide a protective and easily cleanable finish coat.

Surface Preparation

Mechanical Cleaning: All concrete floor surfaces receiving epoxy resurfacer shall be thoroughly cleaned and prepared by shotblasting. Areas not accessible to equipment shall be mechanically scarified.

Application:

  1. Superior Quartz Binder shall be applied over primed area using calibrated notched squeegee. Back roll with a short nap roller to level.
  2. Aggregate should be broadcast to excess over freshly rolled Quartz Binder. After curing, sweep unadhered excess aggregate from surface.
  3. Superior Quartz Binder shall be applied over surface using notched squeegee, back rolled to level.
  4. Repeat Step #2.
  5. Superior Gloss Clear shall be applied over surface using a notched squeegee, back roll to level. Thickness of topcoat may be varied to regulate final system texture.

Superior Heavy Duty Trowel Applied (Mortar) System - #SMS

  1. Superior Primer 171 - 8 mils.
  2. Superior Liquid Binder (Available for low temp (35o - 55oF.) and Chemical Resistant application) plus 3-4 parts Silica by volume. Apply @ 1/8" - 1/4".
  3. Top Coat (optional) Superior Gloss Clear or Superior Gloss Pigmented.

Safety Requirements

Contractor shall be an established company regularly engaged in the installation of epoxy floor systems.

Products

Installed materials shall be Superior Epoxies & Coatings, Inc. products specified herein.

  • Superior Primer 171 is a two-component epoxy resin / amidoamine / hardener system.

  • Superior Liquid Binder shall be a 100% solids liquid epoxy containing no nonreactive diluents, solvents or extenders and the hardener shall be amidoamine or amine base, containing no more than 45% inert pigments for color.

  • Aggregate shall be washed and dried silica sand having proper gradiation to provide maximum reinforcement. The combined aggregate, pigments or inert filler combination, when mixed with Superior Liquid Binder shall not exceed ratio of 4.5 to 1.

  • Superior Gloss is a two-component epoxy consisting of an epoxy resin and hardener formulated to provide a protective and easily cleanable finish coat.

Surface Preparation

Keying: Where epoxy resurfacing does not extend continuously from wall to wall, a key, a 1/2" wide by 1/2" deep, shall be cut around the perimeter of the area to be resurfaced. Keying shall also be performed at doorways.  Mechanical Cleaning: All concrete floor surfaces receiving epoxy resurfacer shall be thoroughly cleaned and prepared by shotblasting.

Application:

1.  Superior Primer 171 shall be applied to the prepared concrete substrate at a rate sufficient to result in a complete wetting out of the concrete with no dry areas.

2.  Superior Liquid Binder mixed with the proper amount of aggregate shall be applied to the primed substrate before the primer is totally cured so as to permit mollecular crosslinking.  The mixture shall be first spread by hand, using steel trowels.  The mixture shall then be hand or machine-troweled to a minimum thickness of 3/16" above the highest point on the floor.

3.  Superior Gloss Clear or Superior Gloss Pigmented (Optional) can be used to achieve a desired finish ranging from smooth to heavy nonskid.

4.  Coving: Epoxy-based coving shall be installed to extend 2", 4" or 6" up from the floor. Coving materials shall be hand-applied using a radius trowel.
